Horse Art: “Two Roans”

"Two Roans" Polychromos pencils on Rivers paper

I finally finished “Two Roans” today. What a long delay, eh? The last post about it was here. I put this piece out of sight for a while as I wanted to look at it with fresh eyes. I was trying something experimental with the black and white portion and wanted to see if I really liked it. I think I do. I thought about adding an entirely black and white background behind the horses. But as I hadn't planned for it ahead of time I was too nervous to try it with this piece. Next time I’ll plan for it we'll see how it looks.

What do you think of the color bleeding off the horses?

  2. gosh, this is beautiful! And horses are notoriously difficult to draw. The color bleeding off the edge of the drawing is an approach I've never seen before. How interesting! Happy to have stumbled upon your blog today...this is really a wonderful piece of art!

  3. Thanks to you both!

@ Louise - Welcome! It's funny but I find everything BUT horses notoriously difficult to draw! *lol* I'm glad you liked my experiment, I'm interested doing more with the bleedout of color into black and white. I think it looks cool. :-)

  4. Just found your site from Artist Journal FB and am so glad I did! You have lovely work. And I have to say, I really like the color fade out idea on the horses - next time you might try it so there's even more bl/wh. It's a great idea and very well done.

  5. Thanks Terrie and welcome! I completely agree with you. I was pretty timid with the fade-out this time but it would be even more intersting to bleed it out even further. :-)
