Who says a crayon can't be used to create art? Chickadee finale

Chickadee 8"x 8"
Neocolor II crayons and Inktense pencils on Aquabord
Well, here it is! The Chickadee painting. I am most pleased by how this new medium worked out for me. It was satisfying in both a tactile and a visual way. High marks for enjoyment! I am looking forward to trying some other subjects in this style. I have a really good feeling about it. :-)

Here is the entire sequence of the piece from start to finish.

Cheers!

  1. This is exciting! It's a beautiful piece. I'd like to know a little more about each step, what you did when. I've not tried aquaboard but I will now :-)

  4. This is simply gorgeous! From the finished drawing I knew it was a labor-intensive piece, and the steps really showed that too. But I love the process, and the details are simply beautiful.

  5. Quite charming. I haven't used much for a substrate other than museum board or suede when working with Neocolor II. I guess I like soft and smooth surfaces. Perhaps I should try a rougher texture though as I like what you've achieved here. Nicely done. :)

  6. Thanks Alex! :-D It was really nice not to rush for once. It makes the process so much more enjoyable.

Thanks Mona! I am going to try them on canvas- backed board prepared with the new Daniel Smith watercolor ground next. We'll see what kind of texture that has. BTW, I think you're very brave to work on suede board. Not an easy surface. ;-)

  9. I'm still playing catch-up, and I went back several posts to see the entire process. It was fascinating to see it progress, and I'm so interested in the combination of the Inktense pencils and the crayons. It's just beautiful! nancy
