I am delighted to announce my new Urban Sketching class series!

 Sketch in the City
Olympia, WA, Saturdays, March 4, 11, 18, 25 & April 1
Sara Light-Waller & Jane Wingfield, instructors

Have you ever wanted to be an urban sketcher? This class will show you how. You’ll learn everything you need to know from how to draw people quickly to sketching complex outdoor scenes. Through fun and confidence-building exercises, you’ll create fresh and expressive drawings. You’ll learn the keys to becoming a successful urban sketcher.

Every level of artist is welcome in this class.

Learning Goals:
                  Explore urban sketching tools
Learn to create confident line work with pen, brush, and pencil
Build your drawings with simple shapes
Play with value in both black & white and in color
                  Understand one and two-point perspective
Explore the art of visual storytelling
Understand the value of thumbnails in sketching design
                  Enjoy outdoor sketching with classmates

The Sketch in the City blog (http://sketchinthecityclass.blogspot.com/) has instructor bios and artwork samples.

Class size is limited to the twenty students so that every artist can get the personal attention they need to succeed.

Sketch in the City will be held on five (5) sequential Saturdays — 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1 from 9:30 - 4:30 PM in Olympia, WA..

Five Saturdays. That’s a big investment in time, we know. We don’t want to waste your time and money. Any less class time and we would have to skim over some important topics. That would be a great disservice to you. We want you to learn all you need to know to become a confident urban sketcher.

We’re so sure that you’ll become a successful sketcher after this class is over that we’re offering students a Money-Back Guarantee on the tuition. If, after the class series is over, you don’t agree that you’ve achieved at least a minimum improvement in your sketching skills we’ll give you a prompt and courteous refund on your tuition.

Sign up by February 18 and get the Early Bird Price of $200. That’s a $25 savings over the regular price of $225.

I'm giving a FREE Art Talk on 12/15 in Centralia.

Pick Up That Pencil

Once they’re old enough, sketches become part of history.
by Sara Light-Waller

You love to draw. Your fingers get itchy when you’re not drawing. When you don’t have any paper handy, you draw on a napkin.
You’re not alone. Thousands of people around the world feel the same way. Urban sketchers are adventurers, naturalists, foodies, architects and museum goers. They love to draw the world around them.
Urban Sketchers draw quickly. They use special techniques to create fresh,  spontaneous cityscapes. They have miniature art tool kits tucked into their messenger bags and purses.
Sometimes sketchers specialize in neighborhoods, or people scenes, or meals. They draw whatever is interesting to them at that moment.
On Thursday, December 15, Sara Light-Waller and Jane Wingfield, both experienced urban sketchers, will give a short presentation about how to be an urban sketcher. During the talk you’ll see some of their sketchbooks and tool kits as examples.
Afterwards, people are welcome to join for a short sketch happening. Bring sketch pads and pencils and whatever other tools you like to use. We’ll all be urban sketchers that evening.
This FREE event is at the Rectangle Gallery, 209 N Tower Ave, Centralia, on Thursday, December 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The talk starts at 6:15. Please join us.
RSVP’s are not necessary but if you have questions please email Sara, sketch event coordinator, at sara@saralightwaller.com.

Centralia's Sketchcrawl is Thursday, August 18th from 6-8pm

If you’re a rank beginner at drawing this event might not be for you, so move along now…

You know how when you’re an artist you’re always trying to figure out what to draw?

You know how you’ve heard about this thing called URBAN SKETCHING and you think it’d be really cool to try?

You know how you’ve heard about something called a SKETCHCRAWL, where a bunch of artists hang out, draw outside together, then show off their stuff online, making other wannabe urban sketcher artists really really jealous?

The problem is that you don’t know where these SKETCHCRAWLS happen…and even IF YOU DID, you’d still be afraid to go to one because:
  1. you don’t want to look like a dork in public
  2. you’re afraid that some car will hit you while you’re drawing
  3. you don’t want other people to think your drawings SUC

That’s why you should come to Centralia’s Third Thursday sketchcrawl:
  • It has loads of historical buildings to draw
  • It’s a small town, so cars will stop for you when you’re hauling your art crap across the street. (They also won’t run you down when you’re deep in the artistic groove drawing.)
  • People are NICE! They’ll cluster around and admire your artwork…which you can then share confidently with all your online friends.
  • There’s a KICK ASS art gallery in town, that’s totally worth the visit.

But probably the best part is that you can make friends with other sketch artists, who might become FRIENDS FOR LIFE.

You’ve got tons of art supplies that you bought because people told you they’d be great for urban sketching. Since you’ve spent all that money already, why not use them?

Not to mention the fact that you really LIKE TO DRAW, but don’t have an excuse to do it most of the time.

That’s why coming to Centralia’s Third Thursday sketchcrawl on August 18th from 6 to 8pm would make your life SO much happier, and even help you make new friends.

And the other artists at the sketchcrawl WON’T JUDGE you or your artwork, because they know how it feels TO BE JUDGED.

PLUS… you can TELL all your online friends that you’re now an URBAN SKETCHER and you can post your artwork to all those urban sketcher ONLY websites.

There’s only space for 15 sketchers at this sketchcrawl, so sign up right now or you’ll miss out.

Email me at sara@saralightwaller.com and I’ll get you on the list right away.

See you there!
