Studio News for November

Heart Ravenna - the hero of "Privateer Princess" soon to be seen in a novel

I haven't been blogging much lately but I thought it might be time to do some updating today. So here's the scoop. I’m just now finishing up some children's book illustrations for a book coming out on Kindle this weekend. More to follow on that when the book is up on Amazon.

Editing is going well on Book 1 of my new Sci-fi/Romance series. Expect to hear more about that soon too. I have about half of Book 2 written at this point and that’s been distracting me somewhat from the editing of Book 1. I want the first two books to come out pretty close together and now they can. Additional books in the series will be forthcoming coming in 2013. :-)

I’ll be rehabbing the "Privateer Princess" website pretty soon to give it a facelift as an advertising platform for the new book series which, in case you missed the news, is the novelization of the webcomic story. (Although the novel plot is somewhat changed from our original comic plot, my Muse apparently having some new and quite new cool ideas about plot changes.) So now Snow Wolf’s and Heart’s adventures will be continuing in novel form. *squee*

Finally, I’m about to start working on my Christmas/seasonal cards for 2012. Upper Case Books in Snohomish has asked me to make a few exclusive cards for them this year and I’m very excited to do it. For those who find themselves visiting the store, they are also carrying copies of my coloring book, "My Day at the Horse Show." You can find it in the local author section.

I do love that store! It’s so nice to be collaborating with an independent book shop in this day and age.

So that’s about it from here at the studio. I now must run along and start drawing for the day.

Cheers to all!

Christmas Card Designs for 2011!

Hi Everyone!

I realize that posts here have been in short supply lately. That's mainly because of my great moving adventure to our new house. But in the meantime, I wanted to let you know that I have 5 Christmas card designs available this year. You can buy them from me directly and you can also find them at the Gift Horse Saddlery in Woodinville. Each regular-sized greeting card features a glossy 4x6 image on the front and comes with matching envelope and in a cellophane sleeve. They are $3.95 each.

Here is the 2011 collection:

"Candy Cane Pony"
For all those who still have visions
of sugar-plums dancing in their heads.

"Joy"
Doesn't everyone know a pair like this?

"Peace on Earth"
At this festive time of year we all seek peace & harmony.

"Merry Christmas"

The Fine Art Shop at Flying Pony Studios is now open for business!

For many years I have served the public as a massage therapist and a fine artist/illustrator. There is always a lot of pressure when one is in business for oneself. You always feel that you have something to prove to the world. This creates (at least for me) the feeling that you’re pushing against yourself and trying to force your will upon others. Some people don’t seem to mind this feeling of imposition but the truth is that you can never “get” anyone to buy your services or products. That is a false assumption. What is real is that the world is full of very creative and wonderful souls who desperately want to share with others what they have brought into this world with great care and joy.

I have met many of these folks on Facebook, Yahoo groups and other forums, and sites such as LinkedIn. I am astounded and grateful for the amazing creative souls that continue to pop up in my life every day.

As I was designing and setting up my new shop I realized that I had changed in a profound way. I no longer wished to try and “convince” anyone to buy my products and services. I no longer had anything left to prove. My desire is to share my work with the world. In doing so I hope that some people will find resonance with it and want to buy it. We as artists (or service providers) can hope for no more than that. Do you like my inner vision? We ask through our art. *smile* We can only hope that for some, the answer will be “Yes!”

Please come and share my visions. You can find the BRAND NEW Flying Pony Studios shop here. While you’re there, please take a moment to check out my home page where you can download some FREE clip art when you sign-up for my mailing list. In the future I will be adding more cards, fine art prints, clip art CD’s, and a line of kid’s coloring and paper doll books all based around a very cute, very fat, pony named Basil. My mailing list will keep you up-to-date on all my newest products and you’ll also get my newsletter which is packed with how-to art tips, free clip art give-a-ways, and other amazing things that I haven’t even thought of yet.

I hope you will stop by and take a walk through my new shop. It’s been a long time in coming!

Peace,

Sara

PS. Oh! There’s one more thing. Please let me know if you find ANYTHING that’s not working in the store so that I can fix it. After all, the paint is still wet on the walls. ;-)

Goodbye to the old, hello to the new

Welcome to 2011! Having summed up 2010 in my last post, I thought it might be interesting to add some thoughts about the new year to this one.

I have great hopes for an art-filled year in 2011. What do I mean by that? I would like to see a continuing flow of portraits being created in my studio throughout the year. I would also like to see a thriving Etsy shop which will feature my greeting cards, fine art giclee prints, and ACEO cards. I would also like to see my cards and prints in some physical stores in my area. I would like to be included in several more art events and shows. I would also like to remind myself to take the time every day to noodle and experiment. Also to draw outside when the weather is nice (and sometimes even when it isn’t!) I have several old art projects that have been on my mind lately. They may not ultimately marketable but might be fun to do. I would like to take some time to explore them as well.

One never knows just how the year will turn out when you sit down to write your resolutions for the year. We all hope that the new year will be a good one filled with completed projects that have brought both joy and growth. We can also hope that we didn’t make too many outrageous mistakes along the way.

I wish you all an outrageously happy 2011 filled with the very best of all you can imagine!

Christmas cards!

This is a big moment for me, I’m opening my first Etsy store! *fanfare*

But what to put in it? Well, at this time of year…Christmas cards! This really feels like me standing on the edge of a high diving board. I’ve never liked heights and here I am, about to bounce and plunge! It’s scary! But exciting too!

The store isn’t quite open yet (can you see all the brown paper still covering the windows?) but have no fear, the grand opening is coming within the next few days. Still in time to get a card or two to give out at Christmas.

To me, the images I've created for these cards represent three different looks into the special world that we share with our beloved animal companions.

"Joy" Copyright Sara Light-Waller, 2010
The first card, Joy, is reminiscent of Thelwell with humor for the horseperson in us all. Clearly this little pony thinks he’s at least as big and important as his tall, dressed-up friend. The artwork is pen & ink with digital enhancements and color.

"Peace on Earth" Copyright Sara Light-Waller, 2010
The second, Peace on Earth, shows how big and small can live in harmony especially when no one’s watching. The artwork is pen & ink with digital enhancements.

"Merry Christmas!" Copyright Sara Light-Waller, 2010
And finally, a Merry Christmas! from an adorable little Christmas puppy. This image is entirely digital from the initial drawing to the finished color.

All of these cards are hand-crafted which means that I assemble all the pieces and mount them myself. The cards are smooth white card stock (good for writing) with 4x6 glossy photos carefully mounted to give a subtle raised look. All the cards are waiting for your special holiday message inside.

Although my store hasn’t quite opened its doors yet, I am taking orders from here. Please email me at sara@flyingponystudios.com if you’d like to reserve your holiday card(s).

Happy Holidays!
